Lexus GS: short lineup overview
The first-generation Lexus GS was planned to become a more exclusively designed alternative with higher performance than the Lexus ES. The result was the car that launched one of the core models in the Lexus lineup — Lexus GS (1993-1997). These GS were built with a copious level of quality, incredible reliability, luxurious interior, and attention to detail for that time. That played a significant role in establishing Lexus in the U.S.
The second evolution of the Lexus GS commenced in the 1998 model year with a new design. The second-gen GS was loaded with a V-8. The 3.0-liter remained for the GS 300 , with 225 hp and 225 lb-ft, offset by the GS 400's 4.0-liter V-8 with 300 hp and 310 lb-ft.
The 2001 model year saw a mid-cycle refresh, with the most significant change — 4.3 liters for an extra 15 lb-ft of torque.
The third-gen Lexus GS arrived in 2006, offering an array of V-6 and V-8 engines. The Lexus GS 300 was replaced by the GS 350 in 2007, with a 3.5-liter V-6, 272 hp, and 254 lb-ft. For the first time, the GS lineup was offered with all-wheel drive. One more innovation for the GS family was the third-gen's hybrid GS 450h, adding an electric motor to the V-6 powertrain that resulted in a strong combined figure of 339 hp. Meanwhile, the GS 430 was renewed in 2008 with a 4.6-liter V-8 with 342 hp and 339 lb-ft.
The fourth and last Lexus GS generation was presented in 2012. It was boldly styled, had a sharper driving attitude, and four turbocharged cylinders. Then, the V-8 was changed to V-6s. It featured 306 hp and 277 lb-ft, handled by a six-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid GS 450h is capable of 338 combined hp, and a later GS 200t added a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 241 hp and 258 lb-ft.
Of course, we can't pass the Lexus GS F (2016-2020). It was an impressive 5.0-liter V-8, 467 hp, and 389 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GS F reached 0-60 mph in around 4.4 seconds to a top speed of 168 mph.
